Log cabin patchwork map picture thingy

Recommended Posts

I know someone who makes these and I love maps so I thought I'd give one a go. You need paper glue, a stamp, a square frame, a square piece of card to fit the frame and a pretty map, like an old OS map.

Stick the stamp in the centre, then measure the distance between stamp edge and the edge of the frame. Divide this by the number of log cabin-style map strips you want to use.

A 10cm square frame works out to be 2cm for the stamp (if you're using a bog standard small parcel stamp), then 4cm either side, meaning you need five 1cm strips per side because you are slightly overlapping them.

Cut strips which are 10cm long and 2cm wide if you want 1cm strips. Fold them in half lengthways and lightly glue them 'shut'.

Then place one immediately above the stamp on the horizontal, and glue it into place. Make sure the fold is next to the stamp. Make sure all of your strips have the fold facing the centre where the stamp is. This makes the picture neater. Going round the stamp clockwise, place the next strip to the right of the stamp and make sure the top corner is on top of the previous strip. Do the same for the next one - make sure it is on top of the corner of the last one, and so on until the last strip, the final corner of which needs to be tucked UNDER the left-hand corner of the first strip you laid down.

Then do the same for the next four strips which go round the edge of the first four strips, but slightly overlap them so you can't see any card between the two sets of strips. You don't weave these second four into the first four, you just do exactly the same as you did before, but on top of the first four. :?

And there you go - a 'log cabin patchwork'-style map art thingy. :)

Excuse the rubbish picture. My camera is rubbish. It looks better in the flesh.
