Mattie457
Hello All! I am sure this has been discussed loads but thought I would ask anyway. My wife planned on getting some chickens but with some gentle pushing we have decided on getting some indian runners. The plan is to fence of part of the garden and build a small pond and have woodchips around the pond and then have the there house away from the pond. My questions is... what is best to get a plastic ready made pond and put that in or some sort of kids plastic bath or any other ideas?? If anyone has some pictures that they would like to share of there set up would be so so helpfull! Very new to all this so any tips or advice would go a long way! Lesley
Ducks make a terrible mess of any water they have! - so you will need to be able to empty the water most days. We use a shallow duck pond from The Domestic Fowl Trust - the small one in the winter and the large one in summer. We dug a sump bigger than the pond - about 18" deep, and filled with gravel. The pnd sits on top of this and we empty the water onto it - it drains downwards and doesn't make the lawn too soggy! We also provide clean drinking water in a drinker with a cage over so that they can't swim in it! I'll see if I can find a photo. If you look at the Practical Poultry forum you will find a lot more duck keepers who will be able to advise you.
