frankiesfreerange
We've had our bird for 9 months since they were 5 day old chicks aand have raised them without any problems at all, until recently We have 3 hens (Bluebell, Bella and Baby) and a cockeral (Cogburn) all RIR's. 3-4 weeks ago we noticed the cockeral, Cogburn developed what appeared to be a black scaly growth on his comb (both sides). It started small but grew and spread to a small patch on his wattle. we were able to catch him 2 weeks ago and paint it with purple water and it appeared to have arrested it but has in the last 7 days come back full force. It appears to be very shinny black scabs large in number and small in size. Whilst the water seemed to help and infact it does appeear to have gone from the wattle, one of the hens does like to pick at the comb, which as you can imagine causes a little distress and has drawn blood. we again yestersay pianted the affected area but we dont know what we are dealing with not how to cure it Cogburn does seem to be in good spirits for this time of year, if you know what i mean, is in very good voice all day (ah bless him!) and has decent sheen and colour, execpt for the affected part of his comb does anyone have any suggestions please? Gamebird
It could be some sort of viral pox which will run its course and clear up in a couple of weeks.
frankiesfreerange
Thanks GameBird appreciate you taking the time to offer help. Is it a pox that we need to do anything about or do anything to avoid it from occuring again, do you think?
Gamebird
To be honest I really don't know but I do know that viruses come and go as they please and usually work their way through the system in time. Much like a cold virus. I don't think there is anything much you can do. However, if it gets worse or is prolonged I would be inclined to seek the advice of a vet. Hope this helps. Gamebird
If your cockerel has got a virus then Avipro might just give his immune system a bit of a boost.
