crop infection l think............

Recommended Posts

Hi there, Basically rosie my hen has been looking a bit miserable yesterday and again today. I picked her up this morning and water started to come out of her mouth. It was only a bit to start with but then it just kept coming. It started clear but then went yellow in colour. I've started to do some research I've found cases of hens getting sour crop a fungal infection, but the other worrying thing is I've read that giving them antibiotics actually makes it worse. I really want to get her some medicine that will help does anyone know if I can buy something from the supermarket. I read that garlic can be good for fungal infections, but has anyone tried giving it to a hen? Its a bit of a long shot I know but I am in a real dilema now, as I certainly don't want to make her worse. She is an exbat and when l got her she was doing this she had baytril it seemed to work this was before christmas.

if she has sour crop, Nystatin is supposed to be really good, it is anti fungal.

I think you need to get it from the vet though.

Baytril won't work for sour crop as it's an antibiotic xxx

it would depend on the cause I would think.

it might also depend if someone else is under the weather, I wouldn't have thought so but no expert, just had similar problems. Someone else will come along with more thoughts I expect. try not to worry about it. you can keep an eye on them . check crops 1st thinkg in the mornings. Best treated at soonest I should think, so just watch & monitor. I haven't heard anyone saying whole flock died of sour crop.

I had this problem only this week with fluid coming from the mouth of my Daisy. She regularly has ACV, garlic, limestone flour, cod liver oil, but she was a poorly chook. Took her to the vets (see my post 'I need help') for the full saga.

I'm give her Baytril at the moment - what a difference. She's rearing to go again and eating/drinking normally, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Took her to the vets today. She started being sick as they took her out of he carrier and they were so good they took her outside and they got the rest up.It came up like cat food ans with a terrible smell.Anyway they said she had sour crop and have given me baytril for her and l was told to keep her warmer then normal. She is under weight and thin. They did say that her muscles in her crop may have stopped working and they wished her luck.It cost me £40.49 so was not to bad.Shes now sitting in a big cage in my living room were it gets warmer and she has porrige and water.High protein food will be good for her and suger to give her energy. So please wish her luck and rosie the ex bat will have a long and enjoyable life
