joegg
Been having some odd eggs recently - they look like they have been air brushed with light brown and darker brown patches. i havent been quite sure who they belonged to. i was in the garden today when Bellina stood in front of me and an egg just dropped out onto the grass it was very wet and on drying it has this airbrushed effect like the paint has run. Little concerned as she seemed completely unaware the egg had dropped out of her vent is this normal ? it does explain why i have found these eggs on the bars and in the run. Olly
Eggs are naturally slightly wet when laid, and they dry out quite quickly and this forms a sort of protective film over the egg. The odd colour change is normal as well, not sure what causes it but they do vary from time to time. I'm getting lovely smooth eggs at the moment but recently they were quite bumpy and rough. Not sure about the lack of awareness of egg-laying, though - it does sound as though she isn't really conscious of it, doesn't it. Mine are very sure about it, and woe betide you if you happen to disturb them when they're on the nest!
