Kalu
Hello, Lightning laid her first egg on Friday - I hard boiled it to have in a sarnie (confession: along with a shop bought one - yuck!). When I sliced Lightnings egg it was very very pale inside - is this normal? She has been in the run which is on grass since she arrived ten days ago so has been eating plenty of grass along with treats and growers mash and layers porridge. The three of them will be free ranging tomorrow as soon as I get to the shop and get some wire to block off a gap in the fence recently discovered. Thanks, K
Jaime
Give your girlies greens from cabbage, cauliflower leaves, broccoli and lettuce as treats - I give mine all my off cuts and the odd extra cabbage as well and the egg yolks will colour up nicely. But only give treats in the afternoon because they need to eat their pellets - and too much lettuce gives them the runs I think if she is laying you should concentrate on the layers pellets and forget the growers stuff - but I'm no expert - somebody is sure to have a different opinion. smithy36
Agree with above - but a note of caution ... Ithought that you should not eat eggs from hens feeding on growers mash? I thought that it contained a chemical to prevent coccidiosis??? Worth checking out!
