Hatching?

Recommended Posts

Well I have one girl who goes broody at the drop of a hat, she is a lovely friendly girl. I would love to hatch but I realise this is not something that somone should do likely and prudence should get a look in. I also know that it needs to be well thought through. I realise that I may get some boys, what do people tend to do with their boys? I know that, generally, they are unwanted and as I live in a residential area I know that I could not have any boys. My husband works with someone who has had experience with birds in lots of ways and he said he would not have an issue with doing the deed if needs be.

Our WIR looks like this...

It measures 4m x 2m. My husband suggested that he could make up a fence using some 1/2 in x 1in weldmesh so there is a 1m x 2m bit of the run fenced off which could be used to put a house in for the broody and her eggs and then used as a nursery for them when they are bigger. This would leave 3m x 2m for the other 2 chooks and also (correct me if I am wrong) if the broody and her chicks are in the nursery where they can always be seen by the other chooks then the broody will still be seen to be part of the flock and, when the chicks are big enough, it will be easier to merge the two flocks.

There will be lots more for me to think about and consider and all advice appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,

I have never hatched myself (but been thinking about it alot) looks like you have enough space - and some one to dispatch boys if need be. If you are ready for the happiness and sadness it involves, then have another chat with prudence?
