Redwing
Bren had a prolapse at the end of Nov last year a couple of days after laying a giant double yolked egg. She laid another huge egg in Jan another double yolker with blood in it And another yesterday (I havent broken this one yet but it is very large) On a hunch I have just checked the dates and realise that all three big eggs were laid during a course of Flubenvet, I have not had any other large eggs from any of the hens. Having made this link I am worried that Bren may prolapse again I don't think there is anything I can do as the Flubenvet needs to be mixed with pellets so I can't feed another type of food during worming to prevent laying (or can I?) Or is it just a coincidence?
Egluntyne
I've not heard of such a thing before but you never know. How old is Bren? Perhaps instead of pellets you could give her a wheat or barley based feed. The particles are small and the dose could be given in the same way, and over the course of the day. Trouble is you might have to buy a 20kg sack of something you aren't going to use much of.
drcara
Hi There I would be inclined to give Janssen a ring. Their advisors are really helpful. I ring them when I am concerned about an adverse event with human medications!! There could well be a link (may not of course), however it may be happening to a lot of hens on flubenvet and it has not been recognised. It should then be 'yellow carded' and put as a warning on the flubenvet documentation. It's really interesting. I have just given a course of it to my 4 girls and on the 4th day had Three double yolkers!
Redwing
Thanks you two. I have some barley and wheat for the meat birds so will try that, thanks Egluntine, you are right I had to buy 25g sacks but at the rate these meat birds are eating it wasn't much of a hardship and the sacks are less than £5 each Bren was bought at POL in October I don't think its necessarily a side effect of the Flubenvet but my thinking is that sometimes worms are a reason for lower egg production so obviously if clearing the worms can increase the laying in a low producer I guess it could give a sudden boost to the egg laying tackle of a hen already producing well We will have to see what the next Flubenvet course produces! (The dog enjoyed the egg!)
