Saronne
I have three young apple trees about to come into blossom. Their branches are low down and in the area where the hens free range. Are hens keen on apple blossom or the developing fruit of apple trees? Will I need to protect my apple trees or do you think they'll ignore them? Aggienator
My hens have ignored my apple blossom (so far).
Hen Watch
My hens ignore the apple blossom that falls to the ground from my mature trees. But if yours have buds low down I would protect them. My little devils ate all the buds off my blueberry bushes last year.
AJuff
Well my monsters ate the cherry blossom Fortunately the apple trees are too high of the ground for them. They have taken a great liking for the blackcurrant, raspberries and blackberry . . . oh and the elderflower!!! Now what would May be if we had no elderflower cordial? snowcloud
Ours have never bothered with any of our blossom I shall keep an eye on them from now on!
tania
ours ignore the fruit trees at the moment, they may be more likely to peck away when the fruit comes.
Saronne
Thank you for your replies everyone. I kept an eye on them the other day and two were trying to jump up at the blossom (and leaves) which were just out of reach! As they are young trees with low branches, I decided to 'fence' them off with some chicken wire - just as a precaution; I'd hate to lose too much fruit to the little devils!
