bluekarin
I have a large cherry tree in my garden (the tree was here when we moved in, so I don't know what its called) and was wondering if the fruits are edible or if there are such things as eaters and ornamental ones. They are a lovely dark red when they are ripe. I love cherries so it would be great of they are eaters and not just ornamental.
chickenanne
Erm... try one and see ? It could be a Morello, which are more cooking cherries, very tart, or possibly straight-from-the-tree fruit. How do you get the birds not to scoff the lot? as soon as mine are ripe, they disappear within 24 hours.
Charlottechicken
I don't think ornamental cherry trees have fruit, as they are sterile so don't even produce anything past the flower stage. My mum has an ornamental flagpole cherry, lots of beautiful pink blossom on it now, but never any fruit. You'd better ask for some cherry recipes now

When they come out I will be brave and try some. I didn't want to just in case they were not good for human consumption. Thank you
eggypeggy
def try one and see, my father in law has morello cherries in his garden and we get great cherry jam! If you're not sure after tasting raw, try cooking a few with a spoonful of sugar and see if that gives you a better idea.
