Hi,

 

I was wondering if somebody will help me with a few questions.

 

1. What is the average age of a chicken.

 

2. Is it ok to grind up their own egg shells and feed them back to them.

I believe that chickens tend to live about 3-5 years - but it can be more. Ex batts and hybrids don't tend to last quite as long as the other breeds though.

 

You can feed them their shells ground up but you have to bake them first. I'm not sure on how hot the oven should be though etc - somebody else will have to help with that - I've only ever given mine grit, shell and calcium supplement.

2. Yes you can. Bake the egg shells in a hot oven for 3/4 mins. Don't do this when you are expecting guests though as it absolutely stinks..... you will know what I mean when you do it.

Might be to remove any bacteria or to make them brittle enough to crush? Just a guess! (I never questionned it, just followed instructions .... baaaaaaa )
