Nicola O
Mildred is slowing down now. She is an ex-bat who has just passed her 2nd anniversary with me, so I guess she's coming up to 4 years old perhaps? For the last few weeks she has got a lot slower, takes a lot more naps during the day, and goes to bed a lot earlier than the others (usually in the wrong house so I have to move her ) and the last week her comb has become floppy - it is still red but some days it has a blue tinge round the edges (this seems to come and go). I guess this is just old age and slowing down - but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can give her for a boost. I've started to give her a few teaspoons of sweetcorn with some Poultry Spice on it each morning, but I've read about Adonis and Digitalis 30c in the homeopathy section. Do you think this would help, do they come in the little pillules like the arnica I've already got. Sorry for all the question but I really want to do the best for her in her old age. Cazjohn
Hi Nicola, I'm in exactly the same situation with my two older girls, ex-batts who we've had for just over two years, they both sleep a lot and go to bed first. They share the head chicken role keeping my other ten unruly girls in check! I have been feeding them the new ex-batt mix which they absolutely love and we've made the decision that unless they show obvious signs of illness we'll let them plod and sleep on. buffie
Oh I'm glad I read this and I do think those remedies will help. I used them with Molllie and they really helped. Twice we thought we'd lose her and she came back brilliantly. It helps the heart and the ascites associated with heart problems. Your girls have been working hard and need a little support, also not sure if you are aware but the BHWT ex batts feed is also helpful for ageing hens, to give them a boost. Give the homeopathy a go and see what you think, Good luck! Buffie x
Nicola O
Oh wow, Buffie thanks for that. Just another few questions then. Do the Adonis and Digitalis 30c come as the little pillules (as they are so easy to give in a sweetcorn kernal), how many a day, and for how long - ie. forever, or just till she perks up? I'll also get some of the ex-bat feed if it would be a help to her and the other two oldies. Do I get it direct from the BHWT or are their other stockists. Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first chook entering 'old age' so I really want to get it right for her. Thanks again, Nicola Edited to add - just found the ex-bat feed range so have now ordered some
buffie
Hi Nicola Well it doesn't need to be given in dosage form. I am no expert on this by the way but have just used it for years and did a first aid course BUT that was in 2000 I am always amazed how animals/birds respond to it, fantastic! Anyway I always use 30c and you can get tincture, I think I posted Galens number in the sticky about homeopathy. I'd give 1 drop twice daily on the beak for a week and see how they get on with that. You usually see an amazing improvement quickly but can also seem worse before they are better. Hope this helps and pleased you are trying the feed, our 4 1/2 year old pepperpot is doing great on it!
