speckled hen
Hi everyone Penny one of my marans has had what I thought was a moult since December. She has lost her knickers most of the feathers on the topside and some round her neck. There are some new feathers coming through now but not many. Daisy and Dora are also a bit short in the feather department around the tail feathers. Henny (top girl) is perfectly turned out! She doesnt seem to be pecking the others too much. I have wormed them and applied red mite powder, also put in the dust bath and nesting area. Do you think it is a moult? If so what can I do to encourage feathers to grow? I tried tuna with poor results, she tried it and spat it out!!! the cat was chuffed and scoffed the lot Any advice appreciated, I want to put my new girls in with them soon and don't want them to get bald!!! Thanks
Abbey Road Girl
This is a post which resonates with me! My four hybrids have been moulting since December. I have fed them tuna (water packed) to encourage feather growth all that time. Although they are frisky and healthy seeming, I am still concerned. They have many balding bits and pieces. I want them to be healthy and happy. But how to make that happen?
moochoo
It does sound like you've got a feather puller. They can be really sneaky about it and you may not notice. Some of my girls are in various states of knickerlessness due to this. I've just started my girls on the ex batt pelletts and they're also on lifeguard poultry tonic to help them re-feather. If you suspect it's still on going you could try them with an ant-peck spray or bumpa bits.
quickcluck
Same here! 6 bald girls, 4 with bumper bits! they have sardines and are now on ex batts pellets. I am at a loss.... but am comforting myself with the knowledge that they are happy and healty and I get 6 eggs a day!
speckled hen
Oh at least Im not alone with this, poor little baldies!! Why ex-batt pellets? do they contain someting different? My girls are on smallholders layers pellets at the moment, in fact they are nearing the end of the bag so I could change them over. I have the johnsons anti peck spray so will get bottom spraying I just want them to look all fluffy and healthy like they did.
