Broody Hen - Fertilised Eggs - will I need a brooder/lamp?

Recommended Posts

I've got my broody hen Amy, sitting on six hopefully fertilised eggs. If we get chicks will I need to get them into a brooder with heat lamp or will she be able to do it the natural way?

I can get a lamp etc round the corner, but would rather not spend out unless necessary; I was just going to get one, but wondered if it was needed so thought I'd ask first.

TIA.

Not normally - unless the broody rejects her chicks - which would be quite unusual. If worried - you could always make up a temporary brooder, from a large box / crate with a spot light / desk light - just incase. But normally mother hen does it all!

Those were my thoughts in the end as well - I have 5 hopefully fertile eggs underneath a broody - due to hatch on Friday :pray::pray: Decided if she does reject them I will get a large cardboard box from Waitrose or somewhere and use a desk lamp we have and hopefully that will do until a proper one can be sourced. Sounds like if you have a source for a light nearby there is no worry for you anyway (I haven't a clue where to get one other than online!).

Good luck with the eggs hatching :D
