Mishapen eggs and blood spots

Recommended Posts

hi, have you seen the Omlet info on "strange eggs". Here is the link.

I've had all manner of eggs, rough, torpedo shaped (after fireworks night), wrinkly ones, golf ball round ones....... Also blood spots are safe to eat as long as you aren't squeemish. Personally I pick out blood spots and meat spots, but that's just me..... :D

The odd misshapen or rough egg can be caused by stress...ie a shock such as a fox or cat bothering them, or even the recent hot weather.

Sometimes roughness can be just calcium deposits.

Blood spots won't harm the hen or the consumer......it is just that they are not aesthetically pleasing. They are usually caused when a tiny blood vessell ruptures high up in the laying tract, and it becomes enclosed in the shell.
