questions about moulting

Recommended Posts

im pretty convinced that my hen is moulting as there have been quite alot of feathers in the run recently, but i have been reading that moulting usually happens in the autumn. Is it possible that she is moutling now in June?

I did my best to examine her yesterday but she hates being picked up  im sure i could see some new feathers growing. She has been under the weather for a good few weeks - can a moult make a hen feel so bad that she loses her appetite and becomes lethargic and hunched? I have been keeping chickens for just over a year and have never experienced a moult before.

thanks

It could be a moult. I would do a process of elimination.

If they've been checked for lice, treated for redmite and have been wormed recently, it's likely to be either pecking or a moult.

A moult usually starts around the head and neck and works down over the body. It can make them feel under the weather, so give your girl a bit of extra boost with Poultry Spice or a water soluble tonic added to their drinking water.
