nigama
Hi there, Had my chooks about a week now and love them, they are already really tame and my little girls adore them. Am keeping them on woodchips and letting them freerange most of the afternoons with me about, which is lovely. Only thing I noticed which may affect DH adoring them too is the amount of smelly poo's they are doing. I scoop from their run 2/3 times a week and poo check the patio area, but they are huge when they do them! The little chook (Princess Buttercup) are pretty green and slimy looking too altho she seems fine in herself. Don't get me wrong, am not an animal novice, but wondered what you all do about the poops and if I can be doing anything else myself. Suggestions would be v welcome as really love having them Princess Buttercup * Princess Daisy * * They both prefer the shortening to "Your Majesty" and adore being curtsied to by my 4yr and 2 yr old girls dressed up as princesses! Ain't Nobody Here
Their tummies can sometimes be a bit unsettled by a move so the poos may improve! Having said that, they do poo a heck of a lot even when they're not unsettled . There are some things you can do: Give them garlic powder in their feed. It really reduces the smell. Bokashi bran, also in their feed, will firm up their poos and keep the smell down too. When you clean their run out, sprinkle down Stalosan F which disinfects and dries out the area and reduces smells too. If you run is on soil, garden lime is good for keeping the soil sweet. Some people hang a j-cloth sprayed with citronella, eucalyptus or tea tree oil (or all three!) inside the run. I sprinkle citronella in the poo tray.
