Henhathnofury
Is there anyone near Caversham from whom I can borrow some gentian spray? My pepperpot laid a soft shelled egg today and thank god, I caught one of the others pecking at the egg as it came out. It caught her bottom and made it bled. At first I thought it was a prolapse but then I cleaned it up in salt water and there was no prolapse. I have separated her from the others but she needs something antiseptic on it. I could send over my other half to pick it up and even drop it back tonight. Or even buy it from someone if they have two. Help! My Pepperpot is fine in herself but I'm scared of infection......have spoken to the vet and he has said that to keep it clean is the best thing to do...it's a nasty nick right in her bottom..... Henhathnofury
Oh dear - she has started pecking at herself. I have set up a separate area within the aviary and straw-lined a cat carrier for her to sleep in. But I am still worried about infection so in the absence of gentian spray or something similar, it has to be saline solution tomorrow and fingers crossed. Hopefully she will go to sleep now and that wil help the healing process.
Redwing
I am too far away sorry Saline solution will be fine, don't let her back with the others until you have purple sprayed her with the purple spray (or covered the area with blue food colouring) though x
Torrin
Really sorry. I'd love to help as I'm not that far from you but I haven't got any spray. Guess this underlines why I should get some 'just in case'
Henhathnofury
Me too. I just put in a big order for all things chicken and I remembered the egg boxes, the personalised labels, the poultry shield...but forgot the flipping spray. They are all a bit sad and disorientated tonight...being able to see their friend but not for her to come into the nest with them.... I am stressed to the max. The chickens always worry me more than anything...they always look so vulnerable....
hilda-and-evadne
Is there anyone near Caversham from whom I can borrow some gentian spray? I have used green food colouring, and it seems to work, ie it does stain the hen's skin and lasts for several days. (I couldn't find anywhere around here that sold gentian spray.) Perhaps put some in a saucer with a drop or two of tea tree oil (for the antiseptic properties). Good luck.
Lydia
Only just logged on and saw this. If you still need it I have some Gentian Violet you can borrow. I'm in Woodley so not far away and happy to drop it around tomorrow. PM me if you still need help. Hope your girls are better tomorrow

Henhathnofury
Of course! I should have thought of you, if I haven't been in such a tizz! Pierre will probably be back relatively early today - between 5-6.30. Could he pick up from you? We could bring it back the same night.... Henhathnofury
Although now he tells me that he will be later...usual time now, so through Henley etc between 7-7.30. Is this a good time for you?
Henhathnofury
An update: Lydia very kindly came over this afternoon and we sprayed her bottom (Pepperpot that is, not poor Lydia!) with the gentian spray. All seems well now and I intend to slowly reintroduce her to the other three. Positive proof that Omleteers and chicken people in general are the best. Also, if anyone ever needs anything urgently: grit, gentian (which I have ordered) please ask. My girl is grateful to Lydia and now has a fashionably purple bottom. Thanks too Cinnamon for your kind offer, please all your advice. It's great not to feel alone when something like this happens.
