Help poorly hen dont know what to do next

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My hen is a year old, noticed on Sunday she has a very messy vent and rear (she is white so easy to see) she was not as perky as normal on Sunday so i put some verm -x wormer into her food thinking this could be the problem. She is eating a bit and drinking a bit but not as much as normal.

No eggs from her for the last few days so i thought she might be eggbound, i gave her a bath in hot water which she seemed to enjoy and took her away from the others as i noticed one was pecking at her rear end. It looks quite sore with most of the downy feathers gone and just the big ones left. After i bathed her i tried to wash it a bit but the dirt does not come off easily and the actual vent is quite hard and crusty. I have put her in a cardboard box in the garage so she gets some peace from the others. Could she be eggbound or am i totally wrong, what can i do for her? what is best for her? Tried to feel for eggs in her abdomen but couldn't feel anything.

Am grateful for any advice feeling very sad and sorry for her :(

Thanks

Lisa

Welcome to the forum.

You have done the right thing by isolating her and letting her rest for a while.

Can you rig up some sort of arrangement whereby she can be seen by, but not got at by her companions tomorrow?

I would worm her with Flubenvet rather than Verm-X .....it is much more effective.

I would also bathe her nether regions again and see if you can remove the rest of the gunk.

It might be worth spraying her with some anti peck spray (on her feathers, not her vent) and applying bumperbits to the bully.
