Egluntyne
That is good news. Sounds like she chose you, and not the other way round. Mudweasel is a fabulous name. You need something to match that.
Olly
Delighted to hear you have a new chicken, yes of course she will never replace Penny but you will grow to love her. More importantly, Mudweasel (fab name!) will be so happy to have someone to snuggle up to tonight in the Eglu. Names, hmm something to go with Mudweasel - where did you get that idea from? Something will come to you as you get to know this chicken's characteristics.
Angels4
Penny I'm so sorry to hear of your loss....I did some research and found this online in the US to help keeping your chickens cool and thought you might be able to build something similar to keep your girls cool, I'm sure it wouldn't have to be as elaborate as the picture, but maybe you or your mum could builD something similar...a simple box would be fine fill it with some nesting material and some of those reusable ice pack (I think you can see it in the picture) people use them to keep items fresh on picnics. sandyhas3chucks
cor smart . My girls would love a nest box like that.(probably to ignore & Still argue over the perfect one they built I did excactly that and used meal worm pots with water frozen ready to swap. I closed the eglu door & popped in the freezer blocks. It took an hour for them temp to drop a whole degree! but was still cooler!! also mist sprayed in there. May seem excessive but I do have 2 disabled girls! The others seemed to appreciate it too though
Scrambled egg
We have called our new chicken Hattie. She is very young, and Mudweasel (My brother came up with that name, Olly) Angels4 thankyou for that. I will ask my mum if it will be possible-it looks like a great idea! We have noticed that Mudweasel has stopped egg production. I think it's just the stress of losing a sister, but my mum is really worried because Penny was egg bound a few times. Should we be concerned? Also, Mudweasel seems very unhappy about the new chicken. She doesn't like her being in the eglu at all. I just had to dash out in the pouring rain (It has been awful weather here. Sudden burst of torrential rain and thunder and lightning.) To see what was wrong as Mudweasel was wailing unhappily. It turned out that Hattie had gone into the nest box of the eglu which Mudweasel did not like. Hattie is sleeping in our cat's carrying basket (which I cleverly water-proofed:D ). Love her Forever
Olly
Hattie's another good name! Don't worry about them not liking each other, there's bound to be a bit of adjustment but as long as they're not pecking chunks out of each other, they will soon settle down. Imagine if your mum suddenly produced another child and said 'this is your new sister and she's going to eat off your plate and sleep in your bed' - you'd be a bit put out! They've got more to gain by being friends than enemies, and they'll work that out for themselves in a few days. It's quite likely that the stress of losing her sister, and adjusting to a new friend may have stopped Mudweasel laying, also the weather might have affected her. As long as she's looking perky and eating and drinking I wouldn't worry too much.
