Hi,

I brought 30 duck eggs from e-bay, unexpectedly on the 21st day a chick hatched. I have since found out that the surprise chick is an Acraucana.

I no nothing about this breed can anyone help with any information?

I have lots of referance sites that i refer to, but they don't really answer questions for novices.

The chicken is now 8 weeks old fit and well and very friendly he/she loves to be stroked.

Today my little angel made a crowing sound, oops i think it's a he!

I'm not even sure if it's a large bird or not. The egg was the same size as my miniture creasted ducks.

Do hen's make a crowing sound?

Isn't 8 weeks to young to crow?

Any information would be very gratefully recieved.

I've had crowers at 9 weeks. I have 2 Lavendar and 1 white Araucana just now and they have no combs or wattles to speak of at 7 weeks old, so I'm hopeful that they're girls. They lay blue eggs.

Do Boys and girls develop combs on the Acaucana?

How bigdo they grow? Large and bantam sizes.

Acaucana is a large breed with v shaped comb ( a flat one) which is larger on a male.

Araucanas have the classic pea comb - not very visible and tends to be pretty hidden by the fluffy top knot

My lad has just started to crow occasionally at 8 weeks - he has hardly any comb but it was always redder than the other chicks

I'm sure Chuck is a boy he has a red face which extends around his eyes and is trying to crow although a little half hearted.

He also pecked me today he is rather grumpy iin the morning.

No complaints from neighbours yet.
