Old Speckled Hen
I've twice had moles ruin my asparagus bed, in two different parts of the garden - really annoying as asparagus is in a permanent bed and takes ages before it crops well. They ruin the roots in pursuit of worms Lesley, One of my hopes is to have an asparagus bed. No room where we live now but trying to get hubby to retire in two or three years time when we will move to somewhere with a little land. I was wondering if a deep raised bed leaving the original soil, which is very stoney, undisturbed would work. How deep do you plant the crowns? Lesley
Just split this from the mole thread......... We have to have raised beds fior anything we grow as most of our land is former quarry and is land filled - with lots of concrete/rubble/rocks etc. We have a raised bed 10" deep. I would probably go for something around 12"......the plants are placed in a trench that has a raised middle so that the roots spread on either side of the ridge. The crown only has a couple of inches of soil over it. Most of ours settled in quite well but we lost about 4 out of the 24 to frost. The bed needs to be kept weed free but I don't like to see it bare all the time so after the asparagus has finished we put dwarf french beans plants all around the edges and have a second crop from the bed.
