Can ducks use a superglug?

Recommended Posts

I need a proper drinker of some sort for my ducks, as when I have to leave them for any amount of time they sit in/ spill/ drink all their water bowls. can they drink from a superglug & is it specific to an Eglu? My duck run has different sized mesh. Or any other ideas for drinking water? they get out to swim every day, its just drinking while I'm out in this hot weather I'm worried about.

Thanks x

I haven't got a Superglug so I don't know but we do have large feeders with a spiral which holds feed and the hens have to peck the spring to get feed. They are not recommended for ducks so we just thought that we'd use the one in the ducks run as storage for their feed and then we could scoop it into their dish.

We discovered that if the food in the dish runs out that they peck the spring and eat the food from the floor the same as the hens!!

Can you observe them with a Superglug to see if they can get enough water from it? - or were you intending to buy one to use for them and so can't test it first?

We use a galvanised drinker with a guard to stop them swimming in it and it is attached to a water butt and a ball valve so that they have constant clean water to drink and to dunk their heads and keep their eyes clean. (www.ascott.biz)

Hello beckyfitz,

I stumbled across a superglug at a bootfair some time ago (good luck or what?!?) - anyway, I bought it, with the thought my ducks could use it - at £2, I couldn't really leave it there!

Anyway - I put it up, and after showing the little darlings that there was water in it (they're a bit thick, bless them), they now happily drink from it all the time.

The problem with it I've got is that they stick their beaks in it, and all the mud and rubbish on their beaks turn the glug black after about 2 days... so it isn't perfect, but better than nothing!

I have mine attached to the outside of the chicken eglu cube run - so the chooks can't get to it, but ducks can - I have to put it quite high up, otherwise they splosh about in it, and make a hell of a mess!

Having it higher seems to ensure they drink more than they spill!

Hope that is of some help!

Hi

My ducks had the galvanised drinker that is on Lesleys link ....I now use it for the chickens it lasts about 3 days but I can well imagine ducks will get it in a mess if they can! Its good as you can scrub it out
