eggalp
my broody Speckles (a brooody hybrid??) has been in the broody cage next to the eglu run since friday night untill i let her out after work tonight to see how she went. The others were out too. With the older two she semed fine, no clucking or puffing up, but with her best mate Chalkie she was cluck-clucking, puffing up sticking her bum in the air and putting her head down. Chalkie kept attacking her when she did this and there were a few fights Chalkie has always been her best mate and they are always together so im not sure whats going on. If Chalkie wasn't around i would think Speckles had snapped out of her broodyness, but when she's near Chalkie she show's these signs. She paid no attention to the nest, didn't go near the eglu, but she did spend most of her time stood in the run on her own. I have put her back in the cage and back in the garage for tonight, but am i making things worse by keeping her apart? These chickens can be hard work alison
Guest
My speckeldy is broody for about 3+ weeks now I just turf her out in the afternoon..egg production is down(I have been really lazy putting the dog cage etc for her to be segregated.) sounds like you are doing the right thing to me indie
eggalp
thanks Indie a bit of reassurance goes a long way! any ideas why she's only like this with Chalkie and not the others? thanks alison
Abbey Road Girl
I have hybrids and occasionally one holes up in the nesting box like a broody. But because they hate being squirted with diluted tea tree oil, the mere appearance of me with the squirty bottle has been sufficient for the hen in question to flee out of broody mode. Good luck!
