My Duck Leg injury update

Recommended Posts

I've just seen a couple of posts about leg /foot problems so thought i would post my update in case anyone else finds it useful.

I actually know what happened to Louis leg to cause the injury  a metal gate fell on his leg. (i have now removed the offending article!)

I did rush him to th vet last week as I was very worried, he couldn't stand. Vet was good, said how swollen it was and very hot, couldn't feel any breaks.

He gave me Metacam, an anti-inflammatory for cats, to give him daily. This hasn't been too much of a problem, I inject it into a piece of bread.

By Thurday he was getting around but not really putting much weight on it & it was still swollen & seemed to bulge at the ankle so I took him back. He had a conscious x-ray which cost £20 & showed he has in fact got a broken tibia. His leg is now splinted with two metal splints and well packaged. He will need to have it checked and changed once a week for about 4 weeks, the vet has kindly said he will keep costs to a minimum and not charge us for check ups & re-splinting.

Louis is now back with Harry in the garden, is able to get himself around and eating and drinking but can't go swimming :(

Hopefully he will now make a full recovery :D

An added piece of advice - ducks do seem to be very prone to travel sickness - Louis has vomitted every time we put him in the car so if you do need to take it on a journey try not to feed it beforehand!

Anyway, I hope this might be helpful,

Becky XX
