Is it spots or patches? We have marine fish and this is usually a sign of stinging from corals on them.. I think i have heard in tropical fish and gold fish that black patches may be a sign of the amonia being too high? Have you been doing regular water changes?

If its more like spots then this might help!

Black Spot Black Spot, or diplopstomiasis, often follows the addition of new aquarium fish. All fish are susceptible, especially the Silver Dollar and Piranha. It is fairly easy to diagnose and treat.

Symptoms Small black spots on the body.

Treatment Black spot is generally easy to cure. There are a number of commercially available treatments and preventatives.
