ClareH
We got our hens during May half term (and now it's the summer hols!) and were told they were about 18 weeks old then, about 5 weeks ago Georgina started laying and she's been like a factory ever since, same time each day, identical egg each time. The other two have shown absolutely no interest, they all look pretty much the same in terms of maturity although only Georgina does the squatting thing and obviously they all have identical food and living conditions. I'm not sure what breeds they are but Georgina and Francesca are the same (white) and Harriet is brown, all hybrids. My husband (nasty man) is losing patience and wants to dispatch them, my children and I still have hope. Any suggestions?
Olly
Crikey, that's not long - so you've had them about eight weeks, and they may (or may not) have been 18 weeks old when you got them. In fact they may not have been all the same age, and even if they were, they are like humans - they don't all mature at an identical rate! I'd tell your husband to be patient, you'll soon know when the other two start crouching that they're about to lay. It could be another three or four weeks but I bet they'll all be laying by the time the children go back to school. think yourself lucky you are getting eggs from one chicken, some people wait weeks to get even one! He'll forget all this when you're getting three delicious eggs a day.
ClareH
Thanks for that - perhaps we do need a little more perspective!
