Friendly warning re Daktarin - schoolgirl error maybe?

Recommended Posts

My Gingernut Ranger Maude has developed what looks like sour crop (after a thorough review of all these forum posts - thanks so much to all those more experienced hen keepers out there who share their knowledge). I've done various things over the past 2 days but stumbled on the advice of giving her Daktarin.

After more research it's anti-fungal and you need the oral version.

Now the 'warning' and I'm just relating my experience but if you go into a chemist - for example in a supermarket beginning with an s - and ask for daktarin oral gel they ask if it's for you. I said it was for my poorly hen and she promptly put it back and refused to sell it to me. Maybe I should have lied and not recommending you do but she was adament that the meds used successfully by other users of this forum could not be sold for animal use.

I am very very upset and just hope that the olive oil, massage, maggots and probiotic yoghurt do her OK until tomorrow when I find someone more helpful.

Sorry for the tone - just upset about my poor girl x You live and learn I suppose.

Gosh, no wonder you're upset. They are probably just worried about being sued ... can you go somewhere else tomorrow, and ask for it?

Think I'm going to have to although just thought maybe there are out of hours pharmacies that won't be so harsh  ?? Checking yellow pages as we speak - thanks so much for your support x

She was actually correct as the law stands.

Irritating that you had a wasted journey.

I understand but just wanted to make sure no-one else had the same problem - have calmed down a little now and found an out of hours about 6 miles away - Hubby en route so fingers crossed. :D

The law is that if you use a human medication on an animal a vet has to provide you with a prescription for that medication stating that it is to be used as there is no suitable alternative. Whilst annoying the Pharmacist runs the risk of being struck off if they knowingly give you a medication that you intend using on an animal.

I have to say that I have been told by my GP to get a certain cream when I've had a certain problem but the GP said "don't tell the pharmacist which area you intend to use it on". Pharmacists are bound to stop you using things incorrectly but sometimes, for a short period, it's the right thing to do.
