Rowan berries - toxicity question

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am soon going to get some chickens and this board has been invaluable in helping my preparation, though this is my first post.

We are planning to site our run under some trees, partly for shade, but mostly because our garden is VERY tree-y. One of the overhanging trees is a rowan, and I am trying to find out whether the berries will be poisonous to the new arrivals. I've checked in the poisonous plants section and can't see anything there, but I know I've read that the uncooked berries contain toxins (though I've also read that they're safe for humans to eat). I don't want to poison the new arrivals, so does anyone know for sure? Or do I need to provide a cooking appliance to be on the safe side?

Many thanks, J-J
