Hi everyone,

 

One of our young hens (7 months old) has become broody and started sitting on the nest all day if she can - even when there are no eggs there.

She has stopped laying for about a week now whilst she is broody and tries to peck me when I move her. I pick her off the nest in the morning so she goes and wanders round the garden with the other two and eats and drinks, but as soon as I let her back in the run she jumps back on the nest!

 

I've tried fake eggs on there but she'll sit on the nest whether there is any eggs or not.

 

We have no way of seperating her from the other two and if I put her in the garden and the other two in the run they all get agitated as they are a close bunch!

 

Any ideas??

 

So, now I have a 2 1/2 yr old who has giving up laying altogether, one which is broody and isnt laying, and one that cant get onto the nest to lay and so also seems to have stopped laying - so no eggs at all!!!! disaster!!!

 

Has anyone else come accross this?

If none of your girls are laying at the mo-I'd turf her out in the morning and not let her back into the coop. A few days of that should snap her out of it.

 

You could also seperate her by popping her into a dog crate so she has no nest to sit on. (With food and water of course)

 

Might be worth putting a football or big flower pot into the nest so she can't sit in there.

well i have recently had this trouble, however with mine i put her on some fertile eggs that a friend gave me to sit on but as she was too young so soon became bored of sitting on them and totally gave up!! If you cant find a solution as she is young she may get bored so you could just leave her on there, thats if there is no solution.
