Nellie the high flier - advice needed

Recommended Posts

My girls, Nellie and Nonny arrived 10 days ago and seem to be settling in well, Nonny already having produced 3 eggs.

Last night at dusk I heard rather strange noises coming from the bottom of my garden, where the eglu is sighted, and on investigation found Nellie perched on top of a 6 foot high fence.

My guess is that she used the top of the eglu run as a 'launch pad', as I saw her walking on it several times that afternoon.

I got her back eventually - on the other side of the fence are allotments where I'm pretty sure there are foxes, so you can imagine my anxiety, but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent this happening again. Raising the height of my fences seems a bit drastic and scope for moving the eglu further from the fence is limited. Is there any way I can discourage her from walking on the top of the run?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question, folks, but I'm new to all this and would appreciate any suggestions. Her wings are clipped, by the way.

Another option is to put an extra unstable topper on the top on the fence - so a taught length of wire or string - about 4 inches higher than the 'real' top. I found this stopped my escape artist as she could no longer perch on the fence top and didn't like to go straight over the fence without being able to see the other side.
