new girls - had to share...

Recommended Posts

Just rescued these two at the weekend:

Silkies - the white is called "Honeymoon", the cuckoo(?) "Sally" - we suspect she might actually be a he so he'll be "Salvatore" rather than "Sally-Ann".

They're only 9 weeks old but were being bullied at their previous address - they'll be in their own run for the next 6 or 7 weeks until they're big and ugly to gently be introduced to our other girls. They're still making the quiet 'cheep' noises that chicks make but from being skittish on arrival they're now happily taking food from hand.

The whole family has fallen for them something rotten - they really are very very cute.

Great aren't they? All our other chickens are bigger breeds, these aren't bantams so should be reasonable sized and able to hold their own. Hopefully being a friendly pair Sally, if he does turn out to be a he, will make sure that Honeymoon isn't picked on.

Had to do some reading up on them though - they've got more toes than 'standard' chickens which threw me for starters, I couldn't work out how such young birds, one of which can be sexed with some certainty, could both have spurs!

They've also got black flesh, feather feet and, Honeymoon, the white has amazing blue cheeks. Supposedly they make great sitters and the cockerels aren't too aggressive so we're not fussed if she is really a he!
