2 odd eggs. Could they be from 14 weeks olds?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I went into the nest box this morning and found 2 small eggs. I lifted one up to look at it and the yolk and egg just fell out as there was no top of the shell! The shell was very soft and plain coloured. The second egg was a strange shape at the top almost pointed and the shell was really soft. I split it open for the chickens to eat and it was a mini egg with a tiny yolk.

Could these be from my 14 week old silkies? I fed them some porridge yesterday which they loved as the smaller silkie has a dirty vent and I read here that this would firm their poo up! Did it work and they laid eggs or is that not yet possible?

My speckeldy has laid me some nice strong eggs so far. So I would be surprised if it was her.

What are you feeding them? if they are eating layers pellets I suppose it could have triggered the eggs?? they should be being fed differently to the laying hen who needs the layers pellets so they would normally be living separately

Do you have any other hens? maybe one of those laid a few eggs in one day as a bit of a laying 'blip' which might explain the poor quality and size of the two eggs

Hi, I just have the 2 silkies and the 22 week Speckledy hen. The breeder said they could all be fed on layers pellets. I've supplemented that with snails, slugs, veg etc.

So that must be it then. The layers pellets have triggered the eggs!

I'm not sure as I am no expert but they might have

I don't think they should be fed layers pellets I think you have been given duff info, there is not enough protein and is too much calcium in layers pellets, I'm not sure but I don't think its good for growing birds :?

Hi,

I've ordered growers pellets and will keep a bowl of them available mainly for the silkies.

I don't want to seperate the speckledy and silkies as they are friends now.

I've given them all porridge with weetabix and yogurt, (to firm up the silkies poo!) snails and veg so they are not just on the layers pellets.

I've emailed the breeder to confirm all their ages. When I picked them up I thought she said they were 16 weeks and in her first email she said they were 14 weeks. It will be a week since I got them tomorrow so they are either 17 weeks or 15 weeks old now. The speckledy was point of lay so I think she is 22 weeks. I've read that growers mixed in with pellets will be ok. She is not laying everyday. I've had 2 small eggs and 1 large egg from her in a week.
