Can I feed ducks growers pellets as I have loads left over? What do you all feed your ducks. Mine are boys if this makes any difference.

I use to feed mine any growers/layers etc..someone once told me off at the shop where I buy the pellets as if I was doing somethign dreadfully wrong...but there were no problems and they were healthy Aylesburys and Khaki Campbells and ate all manner of other things in the garden rooting around (snails /frogs etc etc)

 

I never had a problem .my drake too ate anything. The only thing they would never eat was corn that the chickens love(they dry stuff)

 

Perhaps more experienced wil say different..(I cant remember the growers has a bit more protein/antibiotic or something in it but its neglible)

ps I was always suprised they never died of salmonella or dysentry the awful stinky mess they could make sometimes but they were gleaming picture of health(killed by foxy at about 4.5 years old) I wouldnt worry

Hi Tom this is still not that clear(but looking more like using layers if unsure??) and looking on practical poultry (you may find more accurate info on their) no mention of boys although someone does suggest mixing growers in with their layers just to get rid of it.

 

All the advice is different and it recommends even checking with each manufacturers formulas(I use different ones sometimes..

 

Organic feed can be different too apparently?

I use to buy the lowest priced for my ducks but they did free range all day so only ate when they came back at night or first thing..they were gone out all day over the fields and far away)

 

Some talk of calcium levels higher in layers others protein levels etc etc

 

Some talk of antibiotic more in chick crumbs etc etc

 

Hopefully someone with better advice & experience will give you a satisfactory answer

careful with medicated chick crumb and ducks it has something in it which is not good for them at all.

When we visited an open farm in the New Forest they had LOADS of ducks and the children got to feed them by filling cups and putting it down so they fed from it. They got through three huge bags of chicken layers pellets so it seems this is what they are fed every day.

 

They stank though!

My three Campbells and three Muscovy ducks all eat chicken pellets and grower etc as well as anything they can find in the garden.....the Campbells do not eat the chicken grain, but the Muscovy Ducks go for it big time.....unkless there is a chicken watching.....despite the Muscovy being three times the size of a chicken they run a mile as soon as the chickens turn up....

Yes aberdulais ours too. But if the ducks are let out first they run straight over to the chickens run and quack like mad. If the chucks are away across the field the ducks go into the chicken run, or else the ducks follow the chucks.

 

They remind me of children so much. Like the younger child that always wants to play with the big kids even though they will sometimes get picked on.
