sootem
Dotty is my new Columbine - got her a week ago. She was very perky when I brought her home but on Sunday I noticed she was sneezing, pulling her neck and shaking her head after sneezing. Yesterday she was still doing this so I separated her from the flock (I got 7 new girls including her) and brought her into the house in a rabbit hutch. When I picked her up she sounded really wheezy and rattly. Has she got flu? I will be taking her to the vets this morning - any ideas I am really really worried. I'm also worried about the other girls though none of them are showing any signs of the same symptoms. Worried Susan
Hen Watch
Susan, vets sounds like a good idea especially if she is breathing rattly. Antibiotics may help her. Let us know how you get on.
Staffordmum
Without wishing to alarm you, and the obviously the vet know best, this spreadsheet is quite helpful :- http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwhjQ6Yng877iz_JNiCN1IQ Good luck and keep us posted! sootem
Just back from the vets. Dotty was given a full examination and he said it was myo ---somthing and has prescribed baytril for ten days. He says that she should recover - hopefully. I have administered the first dose with the dropper and she has taken it ok. I have to keep her away from the other birds. Fingers crossed. Daphne
Susan - its mycoplasma, which can often be solved by antibiotics but which can unfortunately be fatal if you have the bad luck to have a weak/susceptible bird (tho yours is a hybrid and so should be bred for vigour). Keep a close eye on her. If she seems to get worse after 4-5 days I would contact the vet again and perhaps ask about Tylan which is often given for myco. Baytril is a first port of call general antibiotic, which is often all that is needed. Good Luck. Daphne
sootem
Thank you Daphne - I will keep a very close eye on her and fingers crossed she will improve. I feel so sorry for her and am so worried. I am keeping her warm in her rabbit hutch in the house. If she is no better by Friday (and hopefully still with us), I will call the vet again. Thank you everyone. Susanx
sootem
Just to let everyone know that I am absolutely amazed that after only one dose of baytril at 9.30 this morning - the start of a nine day course - Dotty (named after Dot Cotton in Eastenders because of her smokers cough) has perked up already. She has taken food and water and I am so very very happy Thank you everyone for your help. Susanx
Chook n Boo Mum
Susan, I don't know what the incubation period is for myco, but as you've only had Dotty for a week or so, have you contacted the breeder, I'd have thought they should be told, though what they would do is another matter Glad she's responding, and hope she gets well soon, Sha x
