Just got 3 guinea pigs and a guinea pig eglu. Could anyone who has kept guinea pigs for a while please advise as to whether the gp's are happier with the door closed at night, or is it OK to leave it open so they can go into the run at any time.

It probably depends on location, both nationally & where in the garden. My Guinlu is on slabs next to the kitchen door, so I feel it is safe from predators overnight.

 

In the summer, I leave my door open and they are absolutely fine. However, the positioning is such that the morning sun isn't shining in at dawn, and it is sheltered from the wind & rain.

 

I do have the Eglu in a very sheltered position by the house, & I'm in S.East, and in the winter I do push the door to, so they are warm, but not locked, so they can push it open & come out for breakfast.

 

When it was particularly stormy/freezing (or fireworks), I did lock the door but opened it at 7am.

 

My hens are semi self sufficient about bedtimes & mornings, so it suits me to do this with the guineas too & they're very happy, but it's personal choce. Good luck, and welcome to the forum.
