broody hen with eggs advice

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Sorry but im sure this has been asked a million times before. I have a broody hen who is laying on 17 eggs, we have a cockeral who does his job quite regularlly so we are quietly hopeful that we may get something out of this.

Our broody hen was in the cube laying section but we have just moved her and the eggs tonight to our eglu. I've also taken out the wooden bars of the eglu because I thought that may cause problems if we actually get any chicks.

Up until now we have pretty much let nature do its thing as she comes out to eat and drink in the morning with the other girls so I am quite happy about her health.

Come hatch day though I think I will close the wire run on the eglu so the hen and any chicks are quite safe together. I'm also assuming that I dont really need to do much else rather than let the hen be mother and a general check over of any chicks that appear, and deal with any sickly ones.

I have plenty of space to look after the chicks and eventually hens/cockerals as I also have a wooden hen house as well.

Does anyone have any general thoughts or advice on what I have written so far?
