Shredding tree branches ..wood chipper?

Recommended Posts

Hi

As I keep buying wood bark etc for the chicken run I am thinking is it possible for me to buy a chipper & keep all the hedge trimmings(non poisonous of course)to put on the run floor?

Do you think the chippings would be suitable for chickens

And which type of shredder should I get ??

I usually just dump it all in the corner of the field but am thinking it could be used instead

Thanks

indie :)

I do this, and the chickens love it. I have a lot of shrubs to prune, and invested in a shredder last year. Obviously I take care to shred stuff like yew separately and not put those into the run.

I bought a Bosch shredder similar to this one, although I got mine from the mowerman on Ebay - a reconditioned used model. It's been brilliant, it has a spiral mechanism rather than blades which apparently is much quieter, and doesn't need sharpening like blades do. And as noted elsewhere on the forum, Bosch customer service is fantastic.

I only occasionally have enough suitable stuff for the chooks, but they love rooting around in it, and it has made pruning the garden so much easier, I'd really recommend it.

Thanks Olly I looked at getting a giant petrol one(v noisy apparently) but someone else recommended Bosch shredder so thats what I will get

I took all the branches last year to a corner in a field and its now covered in manure...it seemed a waste when I am buying chippings not to make my own.

I will have a look on ebay too as some good deals to get

thank you indie :)
