jam
Hi I have a brahma hen called squishy that wont roost. In our henhouse there a bench that the hens roost on. My other 2 hens, a light sussex and a maran, jump up there no problem but squishy wont go up there. I put a plank on the floor on top of some bricks so that its lower down than the bench, but she wont sit on that either. I even put a ramp from a 2 tier rabbit hutch in the house so she can climb up onto the bench, but she wont use it. When the chickens are free ranging the other two hens are flying on top of guinea pig hutches and runs, but squishy remains with her feet firmly on the ground. Does she not jump on top of things because shes much bigger than the other hens and she cant, and if so are other big chicken breeds the same, or is she just being stubborn? CluckyBucks
Hello i would check her feet for splinters, maybe she wont roost because something is hurting her feet??? If not, maybe she just likes the ground better Why not put her on top of the hen house and she how she takes it? can she fly/flap at all?? xx xx
purrplekat
our Brahmas tend to stay earthbound most of the time, they are not the most acrobatic of birds, being larger. Ours even have trouble getting up and down the garden steps at tiimes. I think they highest any of them has gone is a foot maybe. So just normal for a large lady I would say! jam
she never seems to fly anywhere, unlike my other hens who love a hover down the garden. Shes always been very clumsy. When i put her on the floor after picking her up she normally wriggles free when shes a couple of inches off the ground and lands with a big thud! Even if i put her straight on the floor she manages to trip over her own feet, its quite sweet really. I dont think putting her on the roof would be a good idea as she might get hurt when she lands on the floor. I have seen her flap and take off in the past when she was little, but thats because she was about to be eaten by a cat! Maybe shes just saving her flying energy for emergencies?!... Priceless, nearly wet my knickers! Part of their charm IMO, on the plus side they are pretty much bombproof and manage to terrorise my 7 cats, even eat the cats food when they can get into the conservatory.. and the cats all stand around with their "pleeese get her off our food" faces on. Janty
My brahmas don't exert themselves much either unless it's to chase the cat or get to the grapes first...don't worry.
