smokiechicken1969
Hi there im trying to find out if cockerels go through some kind of moult? hes a bantam. fit, and healthy, good appetite, not being contested by any of his girls. i dont think hes much more than a year old? but i've recently noticed his tail feathers have gone missing, and he has some feathers missing from the front of his neck. there are tiny little pins of new feathers coming through on these areas. he had lovely glossy black/green feathers which are now being replaced with fluffy almost grey/brown down? he's perky and friendly and not plucking himself as far as i have observed? anyone have any ideas? he has organic layers in morning then they free range all day with treats that vary from day to day but the afternoons usually consist of a combination sweetcorn, grapes, small amount of toast with marmite, mealworms, tomatoes, greens, rolled oats. i would say he's been a little bit bossier of the girls in the morning recently but nothing unusual. xScrunchee
Yep, cockerels do moult. Kev is moulting at the moment and every now and then when he shakes-a few feathers fall off.
smokiechicken1969
ah brilliant thank you for the reply. ive asked a few people now and they've all asked if 'she's' stopped laying!!! haha id be a bit worried if he did start laying. i hope this is a normal process for the time of year for a bantam cockerel and nothing that ive done or given him that has stressed him into it. thank you for your reply
