new addition - got a light sussex

Recommended Posts

had my run extension 2or 3 week now and still havent introdused a 4th bird :( ive given up on the dark brown egg layer now as i didnt manage to get hold of French Wheaten Maran and ive decided the Marans are too big a bird.

Gene is still not laying after over 8 weeks now :( just about given up on her ever laying now,

anyway, to increase my egg production i am going to Storrs in the morning to get my 4th bird, question is what do i get ? im pretty sure im going to choose between the following -

Bluebelle, Daisybelle, Whitestar (for the white eggs) Light Sussex or Speckled Sussex.

im trying to get a balance of different birds and different coloured eggs, can anyone tell me (or even better post a pic) of the eggs the above birds lay,

cheers. :D

I know you don't want to hear this, but I would advise against introducing a sole chicken. Whilst some people have managed in successfully there are many more of the problems with the introduced chicken being severely bullied. 1-1 intros are more successful but even they are challenging.

Also, with having a Cochin hybrid, you have a larger girl (once she has fully developed but will take longer so eggs will be a while longer I'm afraid) and so I think another girl would be too much of a squeeze even with the extension.

I would think long and hard before committing to increasing your flock, and suggest you read this thread.

yeh i know the risks, introduced my columbine a few weeks ago with no real problems, in hindsight i would have got the extension 1st and introduced 2 together.

Lizzie, our new light sussex (18weeks) successfuly integrated with the 3 existing girls :)

went in the eglu 1st night with the others after 5/10 mins plucking up the courage, as Sandy did when i introduced her to the 1st 2, freeranged together from day 1 with some supervision and water pistol to hand for a couple of days,

split the eglu run for 10 days so she had to run the gauntlet a bit for about an hour as they get up before me, 1st 2 days she was in the eglu, after that in the run keeping her distance,

last 2 days i have not split the run and everything more or less ok,
