house-elf
i posted a post the ill chicken forum, so i won't repeat everything here, but my poorly hen is soooo much better, and this afternoon she laid an egg, presumably the one the vet could feel, but both hens attacked it and i only assume it was an egg and it looked a eggy consistancy....then i found the top of the shell..... why do they eat the egg ? Are they calcium deficent ? They get layers pellets, chicken tonic powder stuff - cant remember what its called - and they have mixed grit available all the time.... My girls are also getting v skinny, they havent eaten much since they went broody about 2.5 weeks ago, they are not broody now, but i need to encourage them to eat. They dont eat alot, i usually throw away some everyday. Can I fatten them up with treats ? Is that the best way ? any advice appreciated... Egluntyne
They eat the eggs because they taste nice. It is a vice not to be encouraged though. If they make a habit of it pop some pot eggs in the nest box ( they will hurt their beaks on these...s.erves them right) and remove their freshly laid eggs as quickly as you can.
