Advice please

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I;m after some advice or thoughts.

Our Hermione didn't lay on Wednesday or Thursday which is unlike her, she was really lethargic and didn't seem herself, we thought she was probably egg bound and tried lube, hot water, steam etc without any joy so last night we took her to the vets.

Whilst being examined yolk fell out of her so the vet x-rayed her and then pulled out a softy followed by a normal egg.

She slept in the house last night and I put her in the run this morning, since about 7-30 she's sat in the nesting box and done nothing else, she still slow and lethargic.

I'm at a loss now, I can't work out if she's either still egg bound or perhaps broody?

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Dan

Does she flatten herself out if you go to pick her up, and maybe peck your hand away & growl at you...these are classic broody signs, and to be honest I'd say with my limited experience that it's getting a bit cool for a chook to go broody.

Can't comment on the lethargy/egg bound bit & just re-read the part about the vet  .........try giving her some low nutrition food like weetabix for a while, then it will give her egg laying tackle a bit of a rest by not stimulating it to lay, make sure she is drinking as dehydration can make anyone lethargic & they are so small they dehydrate quickly......have you any avipro to mix in with her water, or lifeguard or Battles Poultry tonic, they all offer a "pickmeup" effect.

TBH, if I'd been poked & prodded by the vet & had all that removed I'd be feeling pretty lousy so maybe a dose of TLC & keeping her warm is all that's needed......hopefully

Good luck Dan, let us know how you get on with her
