smokiechicken1969 Posted September 19, 2009 Share Posted September 19, 2009 my cream leg bar is now having supervised free ranging with the cockerel and 5 girls. so far she has been on the outskirts of all the action but has been brave enough to run in for a few treats so shes a confident little thing. shes had a few pecks from the girls and the cockerel has chased her, but not managed to chase her down. so far she's managed to escape, or i have intervened. what will be the next stage for her and the cockerel. will she naturally learn to squat down in his presence or will she try and fight him. im worried that if she doesn't submit she will be hurt. i know that boys can fight to the death but that's not going to happen with the cockerel and the newbie is it? she is such a dear little thing and i was heartbroken when she first free ranged. she ran over to her mum who raised herself up and pecked her! she sleeps seperately from the others but is only apart by some narrow holed wire so everyone can see each other but not hurt her. i know not to let them sleep together until she's been accepted. sorry to be such an anxious mum. i feel the hens are getting more tolerant of her but the cockerel has a very beady eye when he spots her. When she becomes sexually mature, she will naturally crouch down, dont worry about the pecking, the cockeral is just putting her in her place. Leave extra feed/water ect around so she has a good chance of being able to eat and drink without being pecked at. I think it should settle down withing a few days or weeks.
