do i need a seperate nest box

Recommended Posts

hello all,

my cream leg bar is just starting to free range with the rest of the gang. for her own safety though she sleeps seperately. im presuming she will be starting to lay soon (hopefully a nice blue egg  )

will she automatically want to go to the coop to lay and should i put her own little nest box in there and hope she gets the hint? and will another egg in there encourage her to the place or am i now officially bonkers

My new girls are sleeping in a pet carrier next to the eglu. Penny started laying 2 days ago and automatically went into the eglu to lay (on the bars, but it's early days  ). This was even though there's a nasty black roll-away nestbox on top of the eglu nestbox :) .

I would watch her, she may start popping in and out of the eglu to check it out for laying suitability :) .

hmm? she is about 4 months?

had a break through today as she was sat quite happily with my little black bantam so thats good!

sadly for all of us we dont have a lovely eglu for her to be nipping in and out of  , but ive not noticed her going in and out of where her 'bed' is.

not noticed her crouching yet either.

am i right in saying that she will get a bit distressed when she has her first egg or does it depend on the chicken?

my CLB Rusty is about 22 weeks I'm not expecting her to lay this year I'd like her to start in 4 weeks time that'll make her 26 weeks with is about how old Space Chick's Leela was when she started laying and she's about 4 weeks older tha Rusty

they only get 'distressed' if it's a softie bot it's more discomfort or out of sorts It's more distressing for us the first time you see one of your girls trying to lay a softie

my 2 layers did start to lay in the coop on there own it just took about 2 months and 2 large plant pots to get them to lay in the nest box then an other 2 months for them to disside were the best place in the nest is

sounds like clb 's are a little later at laying. she might be a while yet then. i look at her face to see if her comb is changing but its still quiet small, and fairly pale.

sounds like the choice of where to lay is quite a random process for lots of chickens and im sure she won't be any differernt.

she's the dearest little thing, quite lady like really.

thanks for the replies guys, ive put a nice cosy nest box in for her tonight, but i think its wishful thinking at the minute....
