Help! Is it Scaly leg mite?

Recommended Posts

I think Ruby my Welsummer might have scaly leg mite. I haven't noticed a lifting of scales, but I have noticed for the last week that around her ankle area it looks sort of rough and greyish white, sort of warty? In fact there are little warty lumps at the top pf the webbing between her toes. Does that sound like scaly leg mite to anyone? I notice that the leg that looks worse, she often holds up, although when she walks she is not limping or anything.

I haven't managed to master posting photos on the forum yet, so I can't show you unfortunately. I have read on previous threads about Johnsons' scaly lotion which I have ordered as part of a bigger order from Omlet, and also Vaseline which I will try tonight, but if it is scaly leg mite, will it have infested the eglu, or bark in the run? If so, how do I get rid of it? The other two girls look fine.

As a new chicken owner, I feel a dismal failure - I have only had them 3 months and already one is poorly. I shall go away and beat myself with birch twigs.:(

It could be Scaly leg mite. Without a photo is is difficult to be certain. Don't beat yourself with birch twigs  these things are easily picked up and are not a reflection on your hen keeping abilities.

There are plenty of products readily available on the internet for this condition.

Benzyl Benzoate from the chemist is useful, as is Xeno200. * Neither is licensed for use on poultry in UK.
