Disappearing Hen - wing clipping??

Recommended Posts

This evening I went out to shut the run and the (eglu lilac) door and thought I would check the hens were OK, as Korma has been a bit broody and wanted to get her off the nest box. I was shocked  to find only Korma and Kebab in there. After a bit of a panic I spotted Tikka up on the top of the hedge. Its about 7ft high. I was quite surprised as she is the timid one and never goes anywhere without the other two. The 3 of them went up their once when my son closed the Eglu door and they obviously couldn't go to bed, but they are usually happy to toddle into the Eglu when sun goes down.

I managed to work out how the ladder opens and got her down and she seemed fine when I put her in to bed - snuggled up with Kebab (Korma had gone back in the nestbox  ).

My main worry is at the other side of the hedge is a huge great labrador who sleeps outside and I am sure would enjoy a chicken dinner  .

I clipped one wing on each of the girls when I got them back at beginning of August. I am really worried for her and wondered can I clip both wings?

Wing clipping is to put them off balance, if you clip the other wing you'll be helping her to fly.

Do you have anything she could jump on to get to the hedge?

My Donna found an escape route over the wall by jumping onto the compost bin :shameonu:

Needless to say we prevented this from happening again

They do sometimes sit on the top of the run - I didn't think it was too close to the hedge - perhaps it is and she took off from there.

I can't really move it as don't have the room.

She was probably punishing me for going away for the weekend and being confined to the run for 3 days :)
