Gytha has done this a couple of times before, but has always recovered...

 

What happens is that she lays a shell-less egg, then is really "off" for the rest of the day. She usually passes some white stuff after a day of sleeping and resting, and then is back to her usual self.

 

This morning she laid what looked like a yolk in the nesting box and she's been worse than usual this time. She didn't want any food and has spend the entire day by the water feeder, drinking water now and then and straining to pass whatever it is left inside her. She's passed about four lots of gloopy white stuff but she still looks really off. We brought her in as soon as soon as we noticed she was off her food, bathed her bottom (which was very pooey) and oiled/massaged her vent.

 

Is there anything else we can do to help her? Does anyone have any good advice? Should we bring her in overnight or let her go to bed with the others?

Update: we have brought her in and put her in a warm bed on a hot water bottle wrapped in towels. She's had a warm bath and I gingerly had a feel around her vent and got her to expel some more stuff that looked like egg white, so it looks as though an egg may have broken inside her. Hopefully she can pass the rest. Her crop feels very soft and full, we think that's probably due to the water she's been drinking. I'm worried she may be a gonner in the morning.

oh dear... with a bit of luck she will have passed a chewing gum thing ny morning.

IF she were mine IF she hasn't I woukd take her to a vet that knows what they are doing. Mine was removed (2 dif girls) very easily, though I did have one that took over 10days and was very poorly!!!!(vet just could not get to it!)

Mine often have taken a whole day to expell a softee and a night for the shell sometimes.

The thing to be aware is that if it IS broken inside and not eaxpelled it will be going bad inside. A course of antibiotics would probably be needed.

Some extra calcium will help for the future both to help create the shell AND to help with the contractions.

They drink lots as there is a lot of fluid lost (I think) It is a tremendous effort getting it out as there is nothing to push against.

Her crop will not empty as essentially she is blocked.

Fingers crossed she pops out right as rain in the morning having laid it.

I do now try NOT to worry untill the next day, but know it is not easy, esp if it is your 1st experience of them.

You have done all you can for now.
