Pecking and pulling feathers

Recommended Posts

Pecky had been looking rather oven ready for a while but seemed quite happy in herself. A couple of weeks ago the hen died that had been pecking her and over the last couple of weeks she has grown a lovely set of new feathers and I was just thinking yesterday how lovely she looked again. I'm getting 2 more chickens on Tuesday to replace the one we lost.

However at about tea time today we saw Petunia pecking her really hard and pulling her new feathers out. When I got to them I smacked Petunia (bad parenting I know!) and found out the Pecky was bleeding on her shoulder. I've cleaned the wound, fitted both with Bumper bits and sprayed Pecky all over with anti pecking spray and shut them in for the night.

The huge problem is I'm going away overnight tomorrow and I usually just put extra food and water in for them and leave the eglu door open for the odd night away. Is there anything else anyone thinks I can do to stop any more bullying? I really can't understand it as they've been together since we got them and never a cross word so far. I'll spray her again in the morning.

They've got a pecking dangly thing and a whole head of broccoli to go at as well.

Why do they do this just when you're not going to be there??

Any advice appreciated.

xx
