peisiong
Hi All, Can anyone tell me the difference between using "flowers of sulphur (with a carrier cream like E45)" and red mite powder? Are they interchangeable? Can I apply either one to hens which we suspect have mites (sore red bald patches now turning less red)? Where can we get them online or in a london shop? Thank you very much! Pei Aretha Martina - arrived 11 Sept 2008
quickcluck
Hi Pei As far as I am aware Flowers of Sulphur is not a treatment for mites as such although a few of us have been trying it out for a depluming mite problem..... If you suspect Red mites, you need to treat the birds along with the housing by washing it with Poultry shield.... the girls should be dusted with Red mite powder all over including their nooks and crannies such as under the wings and around the vent There are other lice/mite treatments like the Johnsons anti mite spray, but think it depends on the type of critter you think is causing the problem... Sorry to be so vague, I am sure a more knowledgable Omleteer willl be along shortly to help you out!
Kit
Hi Pei My hens had a similar problem to the photo that you posted but I did have a red mite attack during late summer. It was a real pain to sort out, I eventually took my hen to the vets and she gave them some med which meant that I had to withdraw their eggs for two weeks. With a combination of poultry shield, red mite powder & spray I managed to kill them all. I knew I had mites because I saw little red spots on the eglu door. I also think by husband used a blow torch on the concrete floor just in case any eggs were harbouring on it. You should be able to buy flower of sulphur from a good pharmacy or horse place. I think you mix the powder with E45 and apply it on the hen. My hen is still bald and I have yet to try FOS. Will be buying some this week to try. http://www.sprcentre.com/ I bought the things that I needed from the above site Good luck Kit
